BPP ALUMNI LEGACY EDUCATIONAL SESSION

We hope all is well with you and yours. This week we wanted to take a look at the recognition of this time in June that is connected to the story of black peoples quest for self determination and freedom. Juneteenth as it is called has now been recognized as a national holiday proclaiming the freedom of Black people still being held and used as slaves in Galveston Texas. The emancipation of slaves nationally had taken place two years earlier. Freedom from chattel slavery had been granted to slaves throughout the North and South in 1865 signaling the end to a very bloody civil war in America. Black people in Galveston didn't find out until two years later. Why did it take so long to get that information to Galveston? What was said to the slaves in Galveston that day by Major General Gordon Granger that set into motion the infamous 'Black Codes' created to stop newly freed black people from having any rights that America is bound to respect!

This lead to a new form of OPPRESSION that newly freed black people would become all to familier with. Do you know what happen June 16th 1976 and the impact that date had on black people everywhere? Let’s begin our Juneteenth and Father’s Day weekend with examining the truth of that moment in time and gve it true historical significance. Remember if we are going to educate others we must first know the truth ourselves. See you Saturday!
